In 1986, Maciej and Dorota Szumski started manufacturing gas volume correctors. Four decades later, Plum employs nearly 700 people, boasts its own factory with modern assembly lines, and has millions of devices operating across five continents.
The 40th anniversary is a perfect moment to look back at the company’s journey – from the very first MacBAT gas volume corrector to AI-powered energy management systems.
40 years in a flash
The journey to our current position began in 1986 with the first MacBAT corrector. A defining moment came in 2000 with the move to Ignatki near Białystok, which allowed us to expand production and launch our own laboratories.
Parallel to our technological leaps — such as implementing automated SMD assembly in 2010 — Plum rapidly captured new markets. We made our debut in the HVAC industry in 2007, and in 2016, a dedicated division for water metering and IoT devices was established. The crowning achievement on this timeline came in 2022 with the opening of the state-of-the-art PLUM 2 complex. This massive investment doubled our production space and provided robust facilities for the R&D Department, which is now engineering the next generation of devices.

While Plum has its roots in the gas industry, it has been operating across five different sectors simultaneously for years. In the gas sector, we supply volume correctors, flow loggers, and telemetry systems, while also co-shaping the digital transformation of the Polish gas network as part of the eGazomierz project. In HVAC, we design controllers and energy management solutions — including our latest evoSYSTEM ecosystem, which integrates photovoltaics, heat pumps, and energy storage into a single intelligent organism. In the water and wastewater industry, we automate water meter readings and water supply network monitoring. Furthermore, we run our own accredited testing and calibration laboratory and provide comprehensive contract electronics manufacturing (EMS) services.

This spans from the initial concept, through hardware and software design, to rigorous testing in our accredited laboratory. The 40th anniversary of Plum aligns with the upcoming edition of the Plum Ekiden charity relay, which we have proudly title-sponsored for four years. This year’s event will take place on June 13–14 at the BOSiR athletic stadium in Białystok. Last year, over 2,200 runners across 500 teams took part, with more than 50 runners from the Plum Running Team representing our company at the starting line! For us, this is a way to support the Białystok community — not just as an employer, but as a company truly dedicated to what matters.
